A certain somebody told me just now that all my "Popular and Pertinent Posts" links did not work. He told me how to fix them, and I did, and now they work! Hurrah!
The letter posts are really awesome. They're from December 2004; it's scary how little the political scene has changed.

See - there are advantages to hanging out with huge computer nerds. :)
Reading through those letters, what strikes me is that even kids who can barely write coherently have a clear grasp on complex social issues (poverty, crime, race and class, etc.). If we challenge these kids to think even more deeply about these problems and articulate what they're thinking (this is where teaching writing comes in again), we could turn them into the next generation of leaders. That sounds cliche, but I think it's true. You don't have to be a genius to be a leader, but you certainly need to be a good communicator.
