I "learned" to "knit" from a book kit. Trying to start the thing, it was all I could do not to wail and throw the stupid needles down. Apparently my learning style is not exclusively visual. Knitting for Dummies, indeed.
Anyway, it sort of worked for awhile, and I made a square! But then I wasn't really able to figure out the binding off stitch, and I didn't care so much, so I just pulled it off the needle. That's why it's got the open row of loops.

I wanna learn. I have several coworkers who knit and I have asked them to teach it during Wellness this winter.
Congratulations and happy birthday.
Hi! I just started reading your blog, and I'm also an NYC teacher. I definitely know first hand how this profession can drive you crazy, and I've personally witnessed some people go over the edge. However, some of the things you write concern me. I really think you need to get a source of validation for yourself outside of your students. It seems like your students are providing too much of your self-esteem, and that can be dangerous as a teacher.
Once, when I first started, I got excessed, and the only job I could find was teaching special ed. My supervisor holed herself in the office and furiously smoked cigarrettes, leaving the rest of us to preety much fend for ourselves.
I was a very bad special ed. teacher. I had no idea what I was doing, and if that weren't enough, they made me teach math, about which I know nothing. My classes did not run as smoothly as I'd have wished.
But there was this brigade of fiftyish women in our department who were constantly knitting that struck fear into the hearts of the kids. I never understood why, but all of their orders were followed unquestioningly. I gotta admit, they were frightening, although I couldn't tell you why.
Anyway, I've had a vague fear of knitters ever since. I wonder if there's a term for that.
It's not you, the very first experience of learning to knit is a difficult concept, especially if you are trying to figure it out by yourself. Once you begin to create something (which you obviously have), you now have an innate understanding and the hard part is over forever, sort of like riding a bike. Oh, you might also want to try looms, they are a lot of fun and can be very fast! Gina - fellow knitter
