Three Words
Something must change Big disaster today Days are numbered More vacation please I miss Guatemala New career needed New direction wanted Future so uncertain
Better to leave on your terms than have a bad write-up or get fired. Of course, you can also collect unemployment if they get rid of you.
I take it you did not apply for a leave when you left the DoE. Someone should have advised you better.
What you can do is sub in your local schools--including elementary schools--and that might get you a foot in the door. I did that when I was laid off. And, with teachers going out on maternity, you just might land a long-term position with benefits!!
Tell them you left the DoE to work in a Charter school and that you worked sometimes til 9pm and it was killing your personal life. No lie there!!

I could have written this post. Just know that there's someone out here who has a bit of clue how you feel. Sleep well tonight. Please.
I have no idea on what terms you left your old school, if you can even return mid-year- BUT- I would look into it.
Get the hell out of there- dump them before them dump you.
